The Story of Ruby & Violet Studio

Somewhere ages and ages hence, I shall be telling this with a sigh:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

This verse by Robert Frost didn’t just resonate with me—it shaped the course of my life. It was the spark that led me to forge a path different from what most fashion designers take. While others climbed corporate ladders, chasing fashion shows, glamorous paychecks, and glittering parties, I found myself drawn to a quieter, more soulful calling: the art of making. Sleepless nights spent dreaming of sewing projects turned into months of creating, learning, and finding contentment in the rhythm of a needle and thread. The allure of the mainstream fashion world was tempting, yes, but the road less traveled kept calling me. And so, ten years ago, I chose it.

Ruby & Violet Studio was born not just as a business but as a tribute—to my grandmothers, Ruby and Violet, two extraordinary seamstresses who shaped my life in ways I am still discovering.

Ruby, the practical one, taught me the elegance of simplicity and resourcefulness. I remember her transforming old button plackets into fastenings for pillowcases and teaching me the fine art of smocking and embroidery. Violet, on the other hand, was the flamboyant dressmaker—fearless and artistic. On her old Singer sewing machine, she once made me a set of pink pillows with scalloped edges, embroidered with deer and lilies. To this day, scallops and lilies make me nostalgic for her magical creations.

Their influence didn’t stop with them. My mother and aunt continued the legacy, stitching beauty into every corner of my childhood. My mom made every dress I wore until I became a teenager—even my dolls’ dresses! And my aunt? She epitomized handmade fashion, never repeating an outfit and designing new ones for every special occasion.

These four women didn’t just sew—they created. They told stories, celebrated milestones, and expressed love through their craft. And though my grandmothers are now sewing up storms in heaven, their legacy lives on in me. Ruby & Violet Studio is my way of honoring them and carrying their art into a world that desperately needs its grace.

Why Sewing Matters Now More Than Ever

When I started Ruby & Violet Studio in 2015, sewing felt like a relic of the past. In a world obsessed with fast fashion, sewing was seen as time-consuming, expensive, and a bit too “grandma’s hobby.” It was a challenge to make people see it differently.

But now, in 2025, the world has changed. We live in an age of Artificial Intelligence, where fast fashion has evolved into real-time fashion. The ubiquity of brands like SHEIN and the influence of social media has homogenized our style. Everyone looks the same, wears the same, and even dreams the same.

But amidst this sameness, a quiet revolution is rising. People are yearning for more—more authenticity, more mindfulness, and more creativity. They’re choosing to slow down, to craft, to create. And that’s where Ruby & Violet Studio comes in.

We exist to serve the makers of today—the dreamers who want to stitch their own stories, create beauty with their hands, and rediscover the joy of slow, intentional creation. Our mission is to make sewing simpler, more accessible, and—most importantly—fun.

Join the Movement

When you sew, you’re not just making clothes or home décor. You’re crafting memories, building confidence, and connecting with something timeless and deeply personal. Sewing is self-expression, self-care, and self-discovery all rolled into one.

At Ruby & Violet Studio, we want to help you experience this joy. Whether it’s sewing a dress that fits just right, creating a cozy throw pillow for your home, or learning to stitch for the first time, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Let’s sew beautiful things together—for ourselves, for our families, for our homes. Let’s celebrate the art of making and pass it on to the next generation. Let’s embrace a lifestyle that’s slower, more intentional, and endlessly creative.

The road less traveled isn’t always the easiest, but it’s the one filled with meaning, joy, and endless possibilities. Will you join us on this journey?

Thank you for reading. xoxo
